Saving Tomorrow's Agriculture Resources

S.T.A.R. is a simple, free, ,and confidential tool, developed by the Champaign County Soil & Water Conservation District, to assist farm operators and land owners in evaluating their nutrient and soil loss management practices on individual fields. The ultimate goal of this program is to meet the goals of the Illinois Nutrient Loss Reduction Strategy (NLRS).

The S.T.A.R. evaluation program assigns points for each cropping, tillage, nutrient application, and soil conservation activity used on individual fields. The points awarded were determined by the S.T.A.R. Science Committee, composed of experts and university researchers, reviewed practices to determine the points and ranking system used today.

Higher points are awarded to the practices that align best with the NLRS assessment and goals. Those will also be updated annually to reflect the current research that is being done. The total points are used in a scale to determine a rating of 1 to 5 stars for each individual field.
