Natural Resources of Kankakee County

Background Information

Harold Hungerford grew up along the banks of the Kankakee River. His experiences, and the people around him, have influenced his life-long passion for teaching the county's youth and their role with stewardship and sustaining the natural resources. Harold Hungerford has written several books throughout his life, including Essential Readings in Environmental Education, Hell's Bells: Dreams and Memories, and many more.

The Natural Resources of Kankakee County was originally published in July, 1963. A committee of educators and scientists from Kankakee County came together to write about the natural resources found across Kankakee County, after realizing how precious and life-sustaining the resources are. The original book was dedicated to teachers and schoolchildren who play a giant role in the conservation of our natural resources. The committee members realized the key to sustaining our natural resources was through educating the youth in the county.
